[ The Women Upstairs – Review ]

BOOKSTAGRAM

A novel by domestic author Majda Tometić that I literally read in one breath

It is a story about five women who live in the same building in Zagreb. Their lives intertwine after a dead body is found in the apartment. However, this book is not just a mystery – it speaks about the position of women in society and the problem of femicide.

Each of the tenants bears the name of a famous literary heroine, which gives a special layer to the story. It is as if the author wants to convey that the characters in the books are not just fiction – their destinies are real, present in everyday life.

The novel explores the position of women in society, the violence that often occurs behind closed doors and the question of how much we as a society are ready to see what is happening around us.

Each of the women carries her own past, her own dreams and her own wounds, but at the same time they share something deeper – the experience of surviving in a world that does not protect them enough.

Over the course of the plot, the women connect with each other and their lives intertwine. The plot constantly takes us into the worlds of six different women and provides insight into their lives, attitudes, fears and struggles.

The novel immediately drew me in because it is written simply, but powerfully. There are no unnecessary words or pathos, but feelings are present in every sentence.

The plot of the story itself is very intriguing.

The boarders are a fantastic bait that I immediately got emotionally attached to.

Yes, read the book!
